Couple Reveals They Did Dirty Menial Jobs to Travel Around the World

Would you give up a high-paying job to travel around the world?

For months now, netizens have slammed reports of Caucasian travelers going to exotic places in the world, particularly in Asia, while asking alms from kindhearted although often poor locals. Many believe that these Caucasians are ‘stealing’ from the ones who are actually poor because the money people give them for travel funds could actually feed the ones who have no means of buying food for themselves out of poverty.

But one couple who gave up their high-paying jobs to travel around the world are not relying on alms from the locals to help them continue their trip. Instead, they decided on taking on jobs in the places they go to – even if that meant scrubbing toilets and doing rather dirty menial jobs!

The couple were identified as Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger, advertising executives from South Africa. The two chronicle their journey through Instagram account ‘How Far From Home’.

Salzburgerland // Austria Helloooo from Salzburg’s lake district! The proverbial eagle has landed back in beautiful Austria, and as we plan on being here for a little while, we wanted to brush up on our German lingo again, so…. We’ve partnered with @RosettaStone to try and get more peeps to chat together (read our latest blog post to find out how – #linkinbio) —————————————- If you’re reading this and can speak something other than English, comment below in your native tongue (and tell us why we should visit your country – maybe include your country’s flag too to make it easier for us to detect the language ?). But while their lives appear to be so exciting and something that a lot of people would envy, they recently revealed that stunning Instagram photos don’t really tell the truth behind the picture – and many were quite surprised by their revelations.

*ANNOUNCEMENT* Our (much longer than expected) long-awaited TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD online course is FINALLY live and available #linkinbio – can we get a couple high 5s please?!?! A little over 9 months ago we made a decision to create a juicy travel-crazy action-packed course that would both educate and entertain YOU, the travel-hungry want-to-quit-it-all-to-travel legend. After putting out a survey (to ensure we’d create a course that you actually wanted), we received some crazy feedback that gave us goosebumps. Thousands of you wrote to us, telling us about your dreams and ambitions. How your lives are currently “stressful”, “uninspiring”, and how all you want to do is “see the world”, “feed (your) souls”, and “live to the fullest”. Thousands of you dream of exploring Europe, Asia, South America (even South Africa came up a few times, so yay #ProudlySouthAfrican). Interestingly, you come from all over – Brazil, India, UK, Turkey, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, and Australia. You’re teachers, engineers, students, copywriters, and nurses. Some of you are unemployed, and some of you run your own businesses. You’re passionate hikers, surfers, writers, and photographers. Some of you are curious to find out how to get on the road, and how to plan something so monumental. Some of you are just looking for inspiration and that final push to get you to do it. So, if you have been waiting for the course (or didn’t even know we were creating one), we spoke to your inner voice of wanderlust, and this is what he had to say: “The time has come for you to stop living your current life – the #HowFarFromHome course is LIVE”. P.s. there’s a 50% discount code hidden in our InstaStories – go check it out before it expires ? Shoutout to @craigrodney for today’s pic ?? #travel #wanderlust

So far, I think we’ve tallied 135 toilets scrubbed, 250 kilos of cow dung spread, 2 tons of rocks shovelled, 60 metres of pathway laid, 57 beds made, and I cannot even remember how many wine glasses we’ve polished,” Cartell wrote.

We’re toilet cleaners, dog poop scoopers, grocery store merchandisers, and rock shovelers.

While they were powerful executives back home with stable jobs, they have become blue collar workers in their quest to travel around the world. But we commend them for their honesty and hard work! Instead of asking for alms, they are actually working their way around the world, very literally.
