Common Wedding Traditions

In 2014, Glamour published an interesting article on their blog entitled “Who Knew? 10 Surprising Facts About Wedding Traditions.”

For example, Glamour pointed out that rings are worn on the fourth finger for a reason. In the past, people believed that “a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.”

Queen Victoria is known for starting the tradition for brides to wear white dresses for weddings. She set the trend back in 1840 and since then, brides across the world have mostly worn white for their big day.

The wearing of veils, on the other hand, has Greek and Roman roots. In the past, people believed that a wearing a veil protects a bride from evil spirits.

The popular phrase “tying the knot,” however, can be traced to Celtic, Hindu, and Egyptian traditions. In those areas, the hands of the groom and bride are tied together as a symbolic way of emphasizing the importance of having a strong commitment to each other.
