Getting married is a dream for some people, but for some, it is like going into a strange place where you can never go back.
What with all the separation and divorce we watch on TV and news, how sure are we that we will be able to stay true to our vows with the one we love.
Of course, if you truly love each other, then that is absolutely doable. But how do you know when you’re in love?
Dan West, an Ohio University professor had the simplest but sweetest response to this question when his students asked him about his take.
Dan is a professor in different courses including “Introduction to Human Communication.” During one of the last sessions of the said class, he opened the floor for his students to as even personal questions about the final topic that they tackled: love and relationship.
Dan has been married to his wife Vicki for 24 years, just a year shy from celebrating their silver anniversary. This is an impressive number given the fact that a lot of people don’t even reach 10.
But there’s more to their story than being married for that long. When a student asked him this question, he had the simplest answer.
“How do you know when you’re in love?”
“It just hits you, you can’t expect it and you can’t plan for it.” He began.
But he wanted to explain his story more and decided to let the students in on their own love story.
“We had just come from a movie and stopped by a grocery store so I could buy some food for the next day. We were looking at ice cream and as I watched her choosing, I realized that I was going to be buying groceries with her for the rest of my life,”
The students couldn’t help but swoon at the professor’s answer. It was simple yet sweet.
It’s amazing how simple stories can make professors connect beautifully with their students.
