John Legend Makes Bold Statement During Academy Awards 2015

Multi-awarded singer and songwriter John Legend has recently delivered a powerful and moving acceptance speech during the recently concluded 87th Academy Awards held on February 22, 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

After Legend and Common received an Oscar for the song “Glory”, which was included in the soundtrack of the movie “Selma”, the American artist made a controversial remark about slavery and incarceration, according to a report by LA Times.

Selma is now, because the struggle for justice is right now. There are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850,” Legend said.

Michelle Alexander, an attorney who published the book “The New Jim Crow” said that Legend’s remark on stage raised awareness on the most important issue of racial justice in their time.

“He’s absolutely right that the struggle for racial justice is not simply part of our history, but is as urgent now as ever,” Alexander added.
