Son of ‘Habal-Habal’ Driver Tops ME Board Exams

It’s the year of the Mindanaoans! Aside from the Philippines having a Mindanaoan as president plus a host of other prestigious seats and awards that people from Mindanao have received recently, another one has brought pride to the southern Philippines island of Mindanao by topping the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Board Exams!

Elso Umbao Elumbaring, Jr. who graduated from Notre Dame University in Cotabato City topped the exams with a rating of 90.15%. The second placer from Sorsogon Stage College – Sorsogon, Edcel Reblora Fortes got a rating of 89.40% and the third placer, who also happens to come from Mindanao – Donato Lecera Juayang Jr. of Mindanao State University – Marawi City, got a rating of 89.35%.

What makes Elumbaring’s achievement even more amazing is that his father is a ‘habal-habal’ driver who had to struggle hard to send him to college. If you don’t think that’s actually amazing, you should know that plenty of habal-habal drivers are even struggling with sending their kids to high school!

Thankfully, Elumbaring and his family strove hard for him to fulfill his dreams – and they achieved it!

Out of 4,470 who took the exams, he got the number one spot! Only 3,110 passed the ME Board Exams.

One of the two tenth placers also hails from Mindanao, Nichol Ivan Giguiento Allawan from Ateneo de Davao University, who got a rating of 88.70%.

Congratulations to everyone who passed the recently concluded Mechanical Engineering (ME) Board Exams! Good luck in finding jobs in the real world.

As for those who weren’t able to pass the exams, it’s not the end of the world. Study hard and try again next time.
