Being the son of a jeepney driver and a household helper, Jay Torres Solitana knew that his parents could never afford to send him to college yet this did not dampen his spirits. Instead, he used this as a challenge to push him to strive hard despite the difficulties of having to juggle a regular work load as a call center agent at Teletech and a full time student at the University of the Philippines (UP) – Diliman located at Diliman, Quezon City in the Philippines.
In a touching post on Facebook, Solitana narrated how a high school mentor helped him find scholarship at Far Eastern University but he was forced to quit school two years later because his parents could no longer afford to fund other incidental expenses and allowances he needed for school.
After he quit school, he worked as a call center agent and was able to provide his family with a better life yet there was still a drive in him to finish school. So, juggling a full time job so he could still afford to go to school and help his family, Solitana struggled to cope with the demands of his course, Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication, in his dream school, UP.
Ten years after he first began college, Solitana is going to finally graduate! In his post, he thanked a lot of people who made this possible, including very supportive co-workers and understanding professors.
