What is Twerking?

According to Time, twerking is described as a hip-thrusting dance infamously performed by Miley Cyrus. In this type of dance, a person, usually a female, dances to music in a sexually provocative manner. The term “twerk” has been added in the Oxford Dictionary in 2013.

Reportedly, the dance move originated from West Africa and has been known for several generations. In the 1990’s, the dance move was adopted by the African-American culture.

Miley Cyrus posted a video of her doing the tweaking routine to the song “Wop” on Facebook in March 2013.

Initially, the dance move was not performed with sexual intent. However, when twerking was incorporated in rap videos, it became sexualized.
