Cooking tilapia may sound like a terrific idea for your next meal but the real question here is this – is tilapia healthy to eat?
After reading Danified’s blog post, you might want to think twice before consuming that type of fish.
Although unquestionably yummy and affordable, the website claims that tilapia “has been found to be even more disastrous for your health than some of the more notorious meats like beef and pork.” Also, Danified noted that most of the fish you can buy in the market are cultivated fish – not wild tilapia.
What this means is that the tilapia we commonly see are bred on farms and they are fed an “unnatural, unhealthy diet of GMO corn and soy pellets.”
How is that a bad thing for us? The website further explained that farm-raised tilapia can cause health problems ranging from asthma, joint inflammation, coronary disease, and many others. The fish also contains massive amounts of cancer-causing agents compared with wild tilapia.
Compared with wild tilapia, farm-raised ones are also significantly less healthy because they have fewer protein plus they have more Omega 6 saturated fats than Omega 3.
Another factor to consider here is that they also have high amounts of pesticides which are “used to treat the fish for infections while being farmed.” Some of these pesticides are intended to kill sea lice and they are often too strong they can kill other types of fish upon exposure.
As if those red flags were not enough, high levels of dioxin. HealthyFoodTeam shared “Dioxins are not only toxic, but can also affect your proper body and can even trigger cancer development. The worst thing is that as soon as dioxins get into the body, they take a long time to get out – around 7-11 years is half of what it takes for dioxin to be removed from the body.”
You might want to remember these warnings before purchasing tilapia on the market next time.
