Dying OFW Stuck In Kuwait Because of Debt Wants To See Family From The Philippines

Jonas Sol Bersabal is an OFW, who worked as a teaboy in Kuwait. He has not seen his family for seven years, so he requested to be visited by his mother and children in the hospital before he passes away. The breadwinner of the family is currently comatose, due to being sick with leukemia.

“Ako po ay nagmamakaawa, bago po na-comatose ang aking nobyo na si Sol ay pinakiusapan ako na hilingin sa ating pamahalaan na mabigyan ng pagkakataon na mabisita siya ng kanyang ina at dalawang anak bago man lang siya pumanaw”, Danjean, his girlfriend, who is working as a nurse in Kuwait, said.

Danjean explained why Bersabal was not allowed to leave the country, even before his condition worsened. She said that Bersabal’s ex-girlfriend left a huge amount of unpaid debt to a company in Kuwait, and assigned Bersabal as the guarantor. He is now being asked to pay KD2,000 with interest for a debt he did not owe.

“Dahil sa kabaitan ni Jonas ay naloko siya ng dati niyang nobya na umutang ng pera at siya ang pinag- guarantor, kaya si Jonas ngayon ang nagdurusa ng pinaggagawa ng kanyang dating nobya,” she said.

He was already paying the debt little by little until his leukemia took a toll on his health.

His current company gave no financial help, not even an initiative to process his family’s visiting documents to Kuwait. Fortunately, his insurance covered his hospital bills.

Because of this, his girlfriend is asking for the Philippine embassy’s help to allow his wish to come true.

“Mabait na tao po ang aking nobyo, napakalaki ng kanyang responsibilidad dahil siya lang po ang breadwinner ng  kanyang  ina at dalawang anak,” she added.

The Joint Assistance Desk of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration has already reached out to them to offer help.
