Americans React To The #AlDub Phenomenon

With blazing Twitter records behind its back, popular loveteam AlDub has officially become more than a Philippine sensation. In fact, even foreign countries couldn’t help but take notice of the hashtag #AlDub which often racks several millions.

AlDub, of course, is the tandem of actor Alden Richards and dubsmashing comedian Yaya Dub (Maine Mendoza) from the Philippine’s longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga.

In this recent video by Buzzfeed, we see the reactions of a few Americans who were shown the initial episode that started the phenomenon. Most of them were confused and clueless at the start but they evidently had a blast later on.

You can watch the video here:

“Dude, this is the most shipped couple of all-time!” one of the American viewers said while the other guy commented, “I get it. We’re watching an unlikely couple go through the early stages of a romance, that awkward phase where it’s like “How do I communicate? Should I text? No, wait. I’ll send her a DubSmash.”

Another summed it up this way: “Two young good-looking people with interesting personalities. I think they’ll hit it off!”

So yes, despite the language barrier, even foreigners get what the show is all about.

AlDub Twitter World Records

According to RecordSetter, AlDub currently holds the title “Most Tweets Of A Hashtag In 24 Hours.” The on-screen couple set the record during their charity concert last October 24, 2015 which took place at the Philippines Arena, the largest indoor arena in the world. The special event raised funds to help schools around the country have their own libraries.

41 million tweets were recorded using the hashatg #AlDubEBTamangPanahon. Fans were tweeting an estimated 48,000 tweets per minute at that time, peaking at the moment when Alden Richards sang his rendition of “God Gave Me You” and when the two hugged onstage.
