With old age comes limited mobility and strength – or so we have all been led to believe our entire lives.
Well, meet Shirley Webb of Easy Alton, Illinois in the United States. This old woman, now 78 years old, has defied all odds and exceeded every expectation. How and why, you may ask? Well this grandmother is unlike any other because she can lift 225 pounds of weights with ease.
What makes her story even more inspiring and impressive is the fact that she formerly had difficulties going up and down the stairs. She said she usually had to hold on the handrails. Even worse, getting up from her chair was often a chore for her.
That is, of course, until she decided to do something about it.
Shirley simply had enough and headed to sign up at local gym Club Fitness in Wood Lawn, Illinois. Currently, she now holds the record in Illinois for lifting more than 200 pounds in both weight and age groups. Nowadays, Shirley’s exercise routine switches from doing some lawn mowing and deadlifting.

“When I go to the gym and work out, when I leave, I feel so much better than I did when I went in, and I just feel so good. I feel tremendous.”
Apart from her unusual determination, Shirley also received huge help from John Wright, her trainer. He admitted it is his first time to help someone of her age and that it took them about six months before she could lift over 200 pounds.
“She’s gotten to the point where everybody greets her and is just absolutely impressed. She inspires everybody that goes to the gym and it’s fun to see that.”
