Reason #1 – Nail varnish contains a poisonous chemical.

In 2011, a research conducted by the National Toxicology Program declared that formaldehyde (usually found in nail varnishes) belongs under the category of “known human carcinogen.” The chemical is often used for embalming the dead so it’s really something you wouldn’t want inside your body just yet.

Reason #2 – Nail biting may lead to damaged teeth and gums.

According to the Journal of Periodontology, nail biting can lead to chipped or fractured tooth. Moreover, it may cause tooth loss and offset jaws. Gums could likewise be infected if you are really unlucky.

Reason #3 – You might lose your nails forever.

Believe it or not, there are reported instances when habitual nail biters eventually realized they don’t have anything to bite anymore. Why? This is because excessive biting can decrease your nail size to the point that they will not grow anymore.

Reason #4 – Finger infections.

Speaking of infections, medical experts agree that nail biting may also cause paronychia a nail disease that, if not treated right away, can lead to excessive pus build up and finger inflammation.

Reason #5 – Germs may bring oral STD.

I know it sounds absurd but yes, it is possible to acquire an STD without having s*x. You can possibly get herpes if you eat your germ-filled nail so you really have to be extra careful. While these instances are rare, prevention, as they say, is always better than cure so don’t take the risk.
